lesson 4 of 6 · instibrain basics

# The button and windows.

Start every session from the instibrain button on your desktop. Claude then loads your spaces and your specialists.

## new words

**Terminal**
The app that shows the window where you type to Claude: iTerm2 on a Mac, Windows Terminal on Windows.

**Window**
One Claude conversation on your screen.

**Session**
One conversation with Claude, from start to end.

## the lesson

The installer puts two buttons on your desktop. instibrain opens the menu. Memory opens your instibrain folder.

In the menu, move with the arrow keys, or type a few letters to filter the list. Press Enter to open. Esc closes the menu.

| Menu line | What it opens |
| Fresh session | A new conversation |
| Resume a session | Your earlier conversations, to pick one and go on |
| Spaces folder | The folder of your spaces |
| A specialist | A window that works as that specialist |
| An operation | A window for a longer task with a goal |

Tab switches between Claude and Codex, another AI, when Codex is on your computer.

In any session, type `open <name> terminal` to open a new window for a specialist. It gets its own name and colour. One window, one job.

The first time on a Mac, macOS asks whether instibrain may control iTerm2. Approve it.

The menu, and the window that open content terminal opened beside it. The Content specialist is an example.

## try it

Click the instibrain button. Choose Fresh session and press Enter. Then type this, with the name of one of your specialists in place of `content`:

```
open content terminal
```

## you should see

- First, Claude greets you and says how many items your inbox holds.
- Then a new window opens, named after the specialist. It reads the specialist's pages, says in one line that it is ready, and waits for your task.
